What do the volunteers do at Laytonsville?

When you join the Laytonsville District VFD, you are introduced to a 'brotherhood' that will last you for many years. Whether you decide to become an EMS member, firefighter, or administrative member, the experiences you have will be one of a kind.

What kinds of membership do you have?

We have three classes of membership that anyone may join:

  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Firefighter/EMT
  • Administrative

What is required of me to join the fire department?

All applicants are required to have an interview with the membership chairpersons Greg Albrecht and Lisa Lessin. Additionally, a Montgomery County physical, fingerprinting, and background check are required before you can be granted admission to the fire department.

How much training you are required to take is dependant on the type of your membership. However, every operational member must take the following:

  • EEO/AA and the Law
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Haz-Mat Operations
  • CPR
  • EMT
  • Voice/Radio Training
  • Mobile Data Computer
  • ePCR and Fire App

Once you are voted into membership, you are required to attend our monthly meetings, on the fourth Wednesday of each month, except December, which is held on the third Wednesday.

Does the training cost money?

The training is provided free to our members. Classes can be taken either at the Public Service Training Academy or through the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

If I have training already, is that good enough?

It may be. There is a process for obtaining equivalency for training from other jurisdictions. Once you are a member, we will send your certificates in for an evaluation, and the Montgomery County Training Officer will determine what, if any, classes you can be granted equivalency for from your training.

Are there required duty times?

All that is required is 24 hours per month. However, anyone who wishes to give more time than that is always welcome. Our station depends on volunteer participation, particularly on nights and weekends, so the more personnel at the station, the better service we can provide to the citizens.

Are there other ways I can be involved at the firehouse?

Yes. If you are an operational member and wish to serve on committees, workgroups, or help out with other duties, your knowledge, skills, and abilities are more than welcome. If you wish to only help with 'behind the scenes' type work, then you may join as an administrative member. Administrative members do not ride on calls or take training but are an integral part of our organization.

What about activities? Will I be required to help out with things other than firefighting or EMS incidents?

Yes. All new members are highly encouraged to participate in any activities that are taking place in and around the fire station. We occasionally have fundraising events that may include breakfast and dinners for the public. We also participate in memorials, parades and public education events thoughout the year.

How do I join Laytonsville?

The application process is very simple. Click on the link below, and fill out our application. Once you have submitted your application, our Membership Chairpersons Greg Albrecht or Lisa Lessin will contact you to schedule an interview. After that, reference checks will be completed, and you will be brought up to be voted into the membership. In the first month, you are put on the table as a prospective member. Once we have received the background information, you will be brought up to be voted in, usually at the following membership meeting.
