LDVFD to Lose Day Staff due to County Executive’s Proposed FY27 Operating Budget

April 8, 2026

Additional Background:

The LDVFD has 6 career firefighters staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At all times we have 6 career firefighters working. We are fortunate to have 3 amazing shifts assigned to Laytonsville. These men & women are employed by Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service. Due to our large area and multiple trucks, we have 3 additional career firefighters [day shift] assigned Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. Bringing a total of 9 personnel during weekday daytime hours.

In the evening and weekends, LDVFD volunteers come in to staff the trucks along with our career staff. Another reason why we must have volunteers at Laytonsville. Our volunteers have regular daytime jobs or they are in school, unavailable M-F during the day, another reason for our 3 additional career day shift firefighters.

The County Executive's FY27 Operating Budget Proposal sent to the County Council is not about cutting the 3 career day shift positions from Laytonsville, it is about relocating them to staff other units down County.

We hope this clarifies what is happening and why the LDVFD is opposed to losing ANY of the career personnel at Laytonsville.

————————————————————————————

The LDVFD strongly opposes the County Executive's FY27 operating budget proposal removing Career Day Shift staffing at Station 17. This directly impacts public safety by leaving Rescue Squad 717 unstaffed during the day. This decision to remove critical personnel is seen as a threat to emergency response capabilities, leaving a large gap in coverage, and potentially endangering lives.

Please email your County Council Member.

The Leadership and Members of LDVFD thank you for your continued support of your local fire department.
